(Happy New Year)
Nowruz, which means new day, is a Persian celebration that happens right when the spring equinox arrives and it marks the beginning of the first month of the Solar Hijri calendar (an Iranian calendar used officially in Iran and Afghanistan). This tradition has been celebrated by several communities, primarily from West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia, for more than 3,000 years.
Usually, people clean their houses before Nowruz arrives to be ready to receive the new. As well, people commit to seeing each other and seeing each other again as part of connecting and reconnecting with friends and family. One of the most popular traditions is to set a haft seen, an altar designed for the new year, that consists of 7 items beginning with the letter "s" in Persian. These items are all associated with rebirth, fertility, health, and vitality. In addition to the haft seens, the table has a mirror to symbolize eternity, goldfish to symbolize life, coins to symbolize wealth, and several other symbolic items.
